After three successive weekends atop the box-office rankings, "The Dark Knight Rises" has finally fallen, with newcomers "The Bourne Legacy" and "The Campaign" taking the first and second spots, respectively.

The new, Matt Damon-less installment in the Jason Bourne franchise, "The Bourne Legacy," raked in about $40.3 million during its opening weekend, putting it squarely atop the box-office standings, according to weekend estimates by Box Office Mojo. It's not an earth-shattering opening-weekend performance -- "The Dark Knight Rises" made about $161 million in its first three days -- but it's a respectable amount.

In second place, the comedic duo of Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis earned about $27.4 million with "The Campaign." The comedy, pitting Ferrell and Galifianakis as opposing candidates for a North Carolina state senate seat, cost only $60 million to make, meaning the film earned back nearly one-half its budget on its opening weekend. Not bad, especially considering Ferrell's movies have been largely hit-or-miss in recent years: Remember "Land of the Lost"?

Although it lost the top spot on the box-office list this weekend, Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" is still gaining fans, as it brought in about $19.5 million during its fourth weekend. That puts its domestic gross at an impressive $390.2 million, while its worldwide gross stands around $768 million.

The final film in Nolan's Batman trilogy isn't as wildly successful as 2008's "The Dark Knight," which had earned $441 million by its fourth weekend, but it is still the second-highest grossing film of this year, behind "The Avengers," released in May.

This weekend also saw the release of Meryl Streep's "Hope Springs," which took in $15.6 million for the fourth-place spot in the box-office rankings. The romantic comedy had a budget of $30 million, making this weekend's performance a pretty good showing.

And, finally, in a move that should surprise no one, Colin Ferrell's largely soulless "Total Recall" remake slipped down to sixth place, earning just $8.1 million in its second weekend. The film, reportedly costing $150 million to make, has taken in only about $44.2 million.
