Box Office Report: 'Monsters University' Schools New Releases 'The Heat' And 'White House Down'

For the second week in a row, Pixar’s “Monsters University” is at the top of the box office class, beating out new films “The Heat” and “White House Down” to maintain its box office supremacy.

According to Box Office Mojo, “Monsters University” reigned supreme at the box office for the second week in a row, earning an impressive second-week sum of $46.18 million, which puts the Pixar flick’s total haul at $171 million since its release last weekend. As the prequel to 2003’s “Monsters, Inc.,” “Monsters University” brings back original stars Billy Crystal and John Goodman, and it adds new voices, like those of Charlie Day, Bill Hader and Aubrey Plaza, to the franchise.

The Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy comedy “The Heat” raked in just over $40 million to take second place at the box office. The film is yet another in a successful string of comedies from McCarthy, the breakout “Bridesmaids” star. The movie pairs McCarthy and Bullock as a two buddy cops working to take down the mafia.

“The Heat” wasn’t as popular with critics as it was with audiences, however. For example, The action comedy scored a 63% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But if its opening weekend is any guide, it appears to have the makings of a sure-fire box office success. Filmed on a budget of only $43 million, “The Heat” stands ready to earn a healthy profit in the coming weeks.

Not all of the weekend’s new movies were as successful, however. The Jamie Foxx action thriller “White House Down” grossed less than $26 million, taking fourth place behind “World War Z,” which premiered last month. The would-be epic was filmed on a budget of $125 million, making it unlikely that “White House Down” will turn much of a profit anytime soon.
