  • Canelo Alvarez hinted on possible retirement in seven years
  • Alvarez keeps himself in shape during home isolation
  • Alvarez hopes to fight in September

Canelo Alvarez has set a timetable to when he would hang his gloves up. Although he has not given any assurance yet, it seems fans are looking at a less than a decade span to witness more of the boxing great.

At 29 years old and still at the prime of his career, Alvarez could be gradually setting the table to his twilight years as he looks forward to his retirement in seven to eight years from now.

“36-years-old, for me,” said Canelo when asked on Mexico's Box Azteca about when he sees himself surrendering to the inevitable father time. "That’s a good time to retire, 37-years-old at the max. I always have discipline, work ethic, and dedication. The only thing that has changed is my successes, I train every day as if I was a rookie.”

To be fair, Alvarez, perhaps, is thinking about the aftermath of potential wear and tear. The Mexican superstar stepped into the pro ranks as a 15-year-old prospect, making him close to being a 15-year veteran in the fight game, appearing in 56 bouts while winning all but three of them.

But judging whether the plan is already fixed for good might be too early to tell as Canelo remains focused on keeping himself at the pinnacle of the sport for now.

“My body asks me to fight. I keep training because I love boxing. I train, whether I have a fight or not. I’ll dedicate myself to my business.”

While sports competitions go on an emergency ceasefire because of the Coronavirus, Alvarez continues to keep himself at work and in shape through personal training as he looks forward to his next fight, which, as his forecast declares, could take place in September.

"In my mind, I'm fighting in September," Alvarez said. "Hopefully all of this will pass, and that date will still be possible."

According to reports, arch-rival Gennady Golovkin and Billy Joe Saunders remain as the frontrunners in Canelo's list determining the opponent for his next fight.

Canelo has faced Triple G twice already, settling to an even decision after the first meeting before prevailing over a close call in the rematch. As of now, there are speculations stating the trilogy is starting to be organized.

A mega bout against Saunders, on the other hand, remains imminent despite the falling out in the negotiations, no thanks to COVID-19. The highly-anticipated clash was supposed to take place on May 2; the talks, however, had the be stopped even before a formal contract was signed as both parties decided to postpone the event.
