Two weeks ago, boxing legend George Foreman went against the wave and relayed his confidence on Andy Ruiz Jr. following the former heavyweight champion’s embarrassing loss to Anthony Joshua in their rematch last Dec. 7. As it turned out, with almost a month already having gone by since the defeat in Saudi Arabia, a few more household names in the sport share the same belief that the hefty slugger could regain the lost glory he once had.
Evander Holyfield and Terrence Crawford knew Ruiz Jr. has always had the potential to bully any given opponent with his bulk and strength. And just like Foreman, both the legend and the active welterweight fighter blurted out that while they are counting on the Mexican-American in his bid at redemption, discipline must be the first order of business.
Holyfield, 57, knows too well the process of getting back to stance after a devastating loss. He highlighted the importance of adjustments in any attempt to climb back the top of the ladder. And having worked with Ruiz Jr. in the past, Holyfield had nothing but credence to the aptitude that the former unified heavyweight champion has.
"Joshua became champion again, right? He made an adjustment," Holyfield tells TMZ Sports. "People who make adjustments, their chances is still good. He made some bad choices. When you make bad choices, you gotta be accountable. If you're accountable, you can make adjustments."
"Go back to the work plan. Do what your daddy tell you to do. All these years, he's been right, what makes you think he's goin' be wrong?" he said of Ruiz Jr.
The 30-year-old Crawford revealed that he knows Ruiz Jr. personally and said that his friend “will be back.”
“Just get back in the gym, you know, train hard, lose a little bit of weight,” he advised his pal in a separate interview with TMZ. “I know Andy. He will come back stronger than what he did, you know. He knows where he’s at right now. He knows he’s among the top heavyweights in the world, so he’ll bounce back.”
