Boxing News: Furious Canelo Alvarez Reveals Why Caleb Plant Fight Is Personal
KEY POINTS
- Canelo Alvarez says Caleb Plant made the fight personal after his comments
- Plant labeled his camp dirty after Alvarez was suspended for clenbuterol
- The winner of the fight gets to be heralded as the undisputed champion
The bad blood between Caleb Plant and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is real only because the American made it so, according to the multi-titled Mexican.
“All the talk, all the [expletive] he says. That’s why [it’s personal]. He crossed the line and maybe too much, that’s why it’s personal. [But] at the same time, it’s one of the most important fights for me,” Alvarez said via Boxing Scene.
“They know what I’m going to do in the ring, even more so in this fight. When something is personal with me, it’s different. In my mind, I have that special thing. It’s going to be a really good night for us."
Plant served as the main instigator for the pair’s heightened tensions after the American put Alvarez and his entire gym on blast on social media, accusing them and head trainer Eddy Reynoso of being dirty thanks to a failed drug test in 2018.
Alvarez was forced to withdraw from his May 2018 rematch with Gennady Golovkin after he tested positive twice for clenbuterol, a performance-enhancing drug that increases a person’s maximum heart rate and exercise output.
Alvarez attributed the failed test to tainted meat as he was surprised with the result since he has never failed a test throughout his career.
Alvarez was suspended for six months due to the incident.
Plant’s words had certainly irked the current unified super middleweight champion, and it led to a physical confrontation where Alvarez ducked a punch from Plant and bloodied him over his right eye.
The highly-anticipated fight is set to happen on Saturday, November 6 with Alvarez putting up his WBC, WBA and WBO titles up for grabs. Meanwhile, Plant will be having his IBF title on the line in a winner-takes-all setup.
Should Alvarez be able to get the victory over Plant, he will become the first fighter of Mexican descent to become an undisputed champion.
Plant is entering the fight as a massive underdog, but renowned fighter Andre Ward believes he can pull off the upset.
