Boxing News: Pacquiao Opponent Eyes KO Win, Aware It Could Be Filipino’s Last Fight
KEY POINTS
- Errol Spence Jr. will be gunning for the knockout against Manny Pacquiao
- Spence says he is not taking Pacquiao for granted
- Members of the combat sports community believe the Pacquiao vs. Spence fight will be tough to call
Errol Spence Jr. probably knows that he is a favorite to prevail over eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao.
However, he is not about to let his guard down, aware of what the 42-year-old Filipino boxing icon has accomplished through the years.
But “The Truth” is aware that this could potentially be Pacquiao’s last fight--win or lose.
The 31-year-old undefeated pugilist also knows that along with that, the August 21 fight is likely to be replayed over and over for the next couple of years.
Appearing on “Morning Kombat,” Spence did not mince words when he said that he wanted to retire Pacquiao when they clash at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
"I want to retire him but I do respect him for taking this fight and being a real fighter. He could've picked Joe Blow or somebody, or an MMA fighter just to get a huge paycheck. Instead, he took the biggest challenge in the division," Spence stated.
While he considers the fight huge and an honor, Spence considers it the second-best fight in his boxing career. The best fight for him thus far was the one against Kell Brook in 2017.
"I feel like the Kell Brook fight was [more important]. If I didn't win that, I would still be here. but it would've been a harder road. It solidified me and was my first world title fight. To go to his country and stop him for the title, at that time he was arguably the best welterweight in the division. I feel that was the biggest fight of my career," Spence explained.
Per oddsmakers, Spence holds a 66.7% chance of winning this fight against Pacquiao. On the other hand, the 42-year-old is only given a 35.7% chance of prevailing.
Regardless, most warn that it would be unwise to write off the boxing legend against Spence.
Among those who say that the Pacquiao vs. Spence fight will be tough to call are decorated amateur boxer Cam F. Awesome and BRAVE CF middleweight champion Mohammad Fakhreddine when both appeared on different occasions on the Sports For All PH podcast.
Although he is a big Pacquiao fan, Awesome picks Spence over the Filipino in the showdown,
“I hate even going for Errol Spence because it has to be against Manny Pacquiao. But I’m not rooting against Manny Pacquiao, I would never do that. I’m just rooting for Errol Spence,” Awesome stated.
Fakhreddine feels it will be a tough fight to call, but he sees a decision win in favor of Pacquiao.
“It’s going to be a tough fight, but I’m going with Pacquiao all the way,” Fakhreddine stated. “I think it's going to be a decision."
