- Tyson Fury jokingly urges Deontay Wilder to wear his costume during the weigh-ins
- Wilder and his camp blamed his 45-pound costume for the TKO loss to Fury in February 2020
- "The Bronze Bomber" says that it will not stop him from wearing another costume in their third fight
Heavyweight king Tyson Fury takes another tongue-in-cheek swipe at Deontay Wilder ahead of the weigh-ins for their fight on October 9.
Speaking with Boxing Scene, Fury urged Wilder to include his costume this time during the weigh-ins.
“Maybe we should have him weigh his costume before he walks to the ring in it so there can be no excuses this time,” he jokingly stated.
Wilder and his coach Jay Deas placed the blame squarely on his approximately 45-pound walkout gear as to why he lost to Fury via TKO in their second meeting in February 2020.
“His legs didn’t look great to me early on. I didn’t think his legs look like they normally look,” Deas mentioned to Boxing Social via Fox Sports.
“I know he came to the ring in the outfit, which was very heavy. I don’t know if that had anything to do with it.”
Despite the controversy he stirred for himself, Wilder said recently that it will not prevent him from making another grand entrance.
“All of my fights have–well, since I became champion, you know, it’s nobody come out with a better dress, better uniform than I,” Wilder shared in a virtual press conference as quoted by Boxing Scene in the same article.
“It’s gonna be something special. It’s gonna be something that I dedicate this, you know, to my people, my tribe. You know, so look forward to seeing it.”
Fury took Wilder’s costume excuses very lightly, almost dismissing them as the British fighter wonders why the American and his camp could not concede that he was the better fighter that night.
”It’s been embarrassing for American boxing, really, because this guy is supposed to be the American heavyweight champion of the world, and you come up with excuses like this on the global stage, with the world watching,” a disappointed Fury said.
“To make all these pathetic excuses on why he lost the fight when all he had to do was hold his hand out and say, ‘Fair play. You beat me on the night and I’ll see you in the [third fight].’”
The drawn-out war of words between the two heavyweight greats will come to a head this Saturday, October 9 as both Wilder and Fury look for a definitive end to their saga.
