Boxing News: Tyson Fury Vs. Dillian Whyte Confirmed For April 23
KEY POINTS
- Dillian Whyte will challenge undefeated heavyweight champion Tyson Fury
- Fury will be earning around $29.5 million, while Whyte will receive around $7.3 million
- The fight will take place on April 23 at Wembley Stadium in London, England
The boxing world finally gets its wish granted after months of drawn-out negotiations as Dillian Whyte signed on the dotted line to confirm his fight with heavyweight king Tyson Fury.
BoxingScene.com confirmed the development after rumors emerged in the past few days that Whyte and his team were going to make the fight official by signing the contract after weeks of negotiations.
The original deadline for both fighters was on February 1 after Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions won the purse bid with an eye-popping $41 million back on January 28.
Fury--the defending WBC and lineal heavyweight champion--is entitled to 80% of the purse, while Whyte gets 20% as the mandatory challenger with a 10% win bonus being set aside as well.
“Fury is entitled to $29,538,000 of the remaining $36,922,500 because he is the defending champion. Whyte is guaranteed $7,384,500 from what’s left of the winning bid as the WBC’s mandatory challenger. An additional $4,102,500 will be left in escrow for whoever wins their fight,” BoxingScene.com reported regarding the purse splits.
Whyte was named as the WBC heavyweight title’s mandatory challenger following Fury’s sensational 11th-round knockout of rival Deontay Wilder in October 2021.
However, Whyte first needed to defend his interim title against Otto Wallin last October 30, but an alleged shoulder injury forced him to pull out of the fight and decided not to reschedule.
This then opened a clear path for Whyte to become Fury’s next challenger.
As for “The Gypsy King” and his camp, they were in search of a mega-fight of their own against Oleksandr Usyk for all of the belts at heavyweight.
The fight would not come to fruition as Anthony Joshua wanted to have a rematch with Usyk for the titles that he had lost, namely the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight championships.
Despite Fury being the heavy favorite because he remains undefeated, Whyte is not someone to scoff at as his 22 knockouts in 31 fights has proven that he can keep up with the best that the division has to offer.
Fury and Whyte are set to do battle at the famed Wembley Stadium in London, England on April 23.
