Boxing Rumors: Amir Khan Tries To Squeeze Name On Pacquiao Hit List
KEY POINTS
- Khan not fully decided on hanging up his boxing gloves
- Khan wants to fight Manny Pacquiao
- Khan wants to prove he does not fear anything
It appears Amir Khan is not sure of retiring from boxing just yet. He mulled hanging up his boxing gloves a few weeks back but the Bolton fighter seems to be singing a different tune. He seems to be not entirely ready to retire, claiming he has already done a lot and has covered himself financially well.
In an interview with The Mirror, Khan tackled the topic once more on whether he should fight again or not. He admits that he has already established his legacy but remains unsure if he should already call it a day.
"Do I need to do one more fight which could ruin my whole legacy? I don’t know the answer. I’m up against myself. I’m debating with myself should I carry on or call it a day?” Khan said.
Khan last fought on July 12, 2019, where he faced Billy Dib. He won that fight via technical knockout to win the vacant WBC International welterweight title. Several months before that, he suffered his 5th boxing career loss at the hands of Terence Crawford via TKO.
Though his boxing career has been marred by ups and downs, there is one boxer he wants to fight. This is his former sparring mate Manny Pacquiao, someone who other fighters would love to face since it would instantly result in a rich payday. But as far as he is concerned, it is all about proving to himself that he can reach a certain level without fearing anybody, Boxingscene.com reported.
“I want to fight against Manny Pacquiao, he’s the champion. I want to reach the level that I can fight against anyone without fearing anything. Why don’t Qatar host the event, as it’s already prepared for the 2022 World Cup? I love Qatar and I loved my last stay there,” Khan said.
Khan was not among the list of potential next opponents of Pacquiao although anything is possible. Among the names on Team Pacquiao's list include Floyd Mayweather Jr., Danny Garcia and Mikey Garcia. But with the COVID-19 pandemic placing all sporting events on hold, there is no telling when (and if) Pacquiao will fight again. The Pac-Man is not getting any younger at 41 and the coronavirus lull is making things complicated for the eight-time division champion.
