The Washington Wizards have made the offer of a three-year extension worth $111 million to Bradley Beal showing their long-term commitment to the player. They are keen to retain the shooting guard for the foreseeable future and have been engaged in talks during the offseason.

Beal, however, has not yet made a decision and is unlikely to commit to the extension in a hurry as he has more than one reason to wait it out until next summer when he could be eligible for a much more lucrative deal than the $111 million three-year extension. The Athletic’s David Aldridge confirmed the Wizards’ offer but also spelled out the reasons Beal is likely to take his time before making a decision.

The 26-year-old shooting guard remains committed to the Wizards with experts claiming that he is open to remaining in Washington in the long-term. But he is not clear on the team’s plans in the short-term and long-term and there is also the fact that he will be eligible for a super-max deal next summer if he makes one of the All-NBA selections.

“The Wizards made their three-year, $111 max extension offer to Bradley Beal today, the first day they’re eligible to do so, per sources. Beal, unsurprisingly, is not signing it immediately, if at all,” Aldridge wrote.

“While grateful for the gesture and while wanting to not abandon the team as it approaches a likely rough season, obvious questions remain about the team’s short- and long-term plans during the prime of his career. And Beal also remains eligible for the much more lucrative supermax after next season if he makes one of the three all-NBA teams for Washington after next season. The sides will continue what have been amiable discussions next week,” he added.

Waiting until next summer seems like the most logical next step for Beal while the shooting guard will not be short of suitors, should he decide to leave the Wizards. The Miami Heat are among teams interested in signing the guard, while the Clippers were also interested before they landed Paul George from Oklahoma City Thunder.
