Brain Dead Teen Comes Alive During Funeral Preparations

An 18-year-old brain dead boy recovered from coma when his family was preparing for his funeral. The incident took place in the Indian state of Telangana on Sunday.

Gandham Kiran, who was suffering from high fever and vomiting, was rushed to a nearby hospital on June 26. He was admitted after the doctors said he was suffering from severe hepatitis. Two days later, he was shifted to another hospital in the state’s capital Hyderabad.

“Kiran’s condition turned critical on June 28 and following the doctors’ advice, we shifted him to a corporate hospital in Hyderabad. There, he slipped into a coma and on July 3, the doctors told us that my son is brain-dead and there were no chances of his survival,” Saidamma, the boy’s mother, said.

Doctors then informed the boy’s mother that his condition was critical and suggested his life support be removed. They also told her to take him back home. Saidamma, a laborer, agreed to take the boy home but refused to take him off the life support.

“I wanted my son to breathe his last at our place in the village. So, we brought him home along with the life-support system late in the evening,” she said.

Kiran was brought back home in a vegetative state. His family members started preparing for his funeral including putting up banners in the village paying homage to him.

“All the friends and relatives gathered at my house to pay condolences all through the night,” Saidamma said.

However, when the family was mourning the death of the boy, Saidamma noticed tears flowing from the corners of the boy’s eyes.

Recalling the moment, Saidamma said, “I was shocked and alerted my relatives, who immediately called a local medical practitioner. He told us that my son’s pulse was still beating and appreciated us for not removing the ventilator.”

The boy was then taken to another nearby hospital and was discharged three days later.

“Within three days, Kiran came to senses and started talking to us, albeit in a low tone. He was discharged on Sunday and we are continuing the treatment as per the doctors’ advice,” Saidamma said.
