Brendan Fraser In Tears After Getting Standing Ovation For His The Whale Performance [Watch]
Brendan Fraser became emotional as the audience at the Venice Film Festival rose to their feet and applauded him at the world premiere of "The Whale" on Sunday.
In the film, the 53-year-old "The Mummy" actor plays an obese, wheelchair-bound gay teacher who is seeking to reconnect with his estranged daughter. When the film ended and the credits rolled on the Darren Aronofsky drama, Fraser's performance was met with loud cheers and applause at the Sala Grande Theatre.
In a video shared by movie review site Discussing Film, the actor could be seen smiling and nodding to the audience as he controlled his tears. At one point, he swung his foot and buttoned his suit in an attempt to distract himself from the surge of emotions caused by the warm appreciation from the audience.
Among those who attended the premiere were former first lady and secretary of state Hillary Clinton, "Fleabag" actress and screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Nick Kroll. Some members of the audience also shed tears as Fraser stood up to acknowledge the praises, Variety reported.
Fraser's amazing performance in "The Whale" could likely give him a ticket to the best actor Oscars race this year.
"Stranger Things" breakout actress Sadie Sink, 17, plays Fraser's daughter in the film. Its supporting cast includes Samantha Morton, Ty Simpkins, Hong Chau and Ryan Heinke.
"The Whale" seemed to be the perfect vehicle for both Aronofsky and Fraser – the former wanted "an actor to reintroduce" and the latter "wanted to be reintroduced," according to Vanity Fair.
The once ubiquitous "George of the Jungle" star took a temporary break from Hollywood in 2014 due to health reasons.
"I believe I probably was trying too hard, in a way that's destructive," Fraser told GQ in 2018, while revealing that he had to undergo several surgeries due to stunt injuries. During his hiatus, the actor had gone through a partial knee replacement and a laminectomy, which involves removing a small piece of the spine bone to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves.
