KEY POINTS

  • Russell Wilson is hardly bothered by his contract situation
  • The Broncos may opt to hand Wilson a new deal early to save on money
  • Wilson’s contract may be passed on to the new owner who will take over the Broncos

Russell Wilson is all set to debut for the Denver Broncos, but other things need to be addressed.

Although the one-time Super Bowl champion’s contract is good for at least two more years, the Broncos need to figure out if Wilson should get a new deal as early as now.

The 33-year-old play-caller will earn $24 million this coming NFL season and will be on the books for $27 million next season.

From there, he will be a due a new contract.

While he has proven to be a top-caliber NFL player, the question now on the table is whether it would be wise for the Broncos to hand him a new deal now.

Dangling a new deal early would save Denver more money although it still depends on the money on the table, NBC Sports reported.

Whatever happens, there are risks involved. Also worth considering are the assets that they gave up to take in the nine-time Pro Bowler.

They may end up offering Wilson a market-level deal, something that may or may not be amenable to him.

A plausible scenario would be to see how Wilson performs this season.

Although he has proven his stock, the fact that he will be surrounded by new players and will see action in a different environment are worthy considerations.

On the part of Wilson, it seems that he is in no rush to address his contract situation.

He is aware that time is on his side and if he sustains or performs better, his value is likely to increase.

Lastly, there is also the fact that the Broncos will be having a new owner soon.

Hence, it is a scenario that Pat Bowen may not touch much on, leaving it all to the next owner to decide on how to deal with Wilson.

With two years still unserved, any move on the part of Denver would depend on how Wilson will make a difference for the Broncos this coming season.
