A father from the Bronx has succumbed to his injuries three weeks after being stabbed by his abusive ex-girlfriend.
Yarelis Olmeda, 41, stabbed Edward Campos, 38, right outside her house around 9:55 p.m. on Feb. 20, police said. He died at Jacobi Medical Center on March 12.
Edward used to work in the Park Department. Family members described him as someone who loved to have fun and a person filled with optimism. He also enjoyed making his children happy.
According to them, it was not the first time something violent happened to him at the hands of Olmeda. The attack took place after Edward suffered months of Olmeda's abuse, they also said per NY Daily News.
Shane Campos, Edward's younger brother, claimed that his brother had been in a messy situation. He also said that his brother was someone who kept to himself. "He could have spoken to anybody, he had so many outlets. My brother was very to himself," he said.
The Campos family thinks that the couple was together for half a year. However, according to the police, they have no record of anything wrong happening with the couple.
Liz Walker, Edward's stepsister, claimed that Olmeda had an argument with Edward before the stabbing incident. She said their argument could be about their breakup.
An anonymous woman who was close to Edward said he had tried to split up with Olmeda, but she kept threatening him while stalking him. The two of them lived in the same building, which made it easier for Olmeda to do all this.
Olmeda was arrested on March 4 on charges of attempted murder and assault, reported The Bronx Daily. She is being held on $100,000 bail and her charges could be upgraded.
Walker said that the family did not know the extent of what had taken place. The only information they had was that Edward had been sent to the hospital after getting stabbed. None of them knew it was severe enough to lead to his death.
