Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins reunited and revisited their uncomfortable nude scenes in "The Blue Lagoon."
Shields, 57, and Atkins, 61, recently reunited on her iHeartRadio podcast, where they recounted their filming moments for "The Blue Lagoon" when she was only 14 years old, and he was 18. The movie followed two young cousins-turned-lovers who survived a shipwreck and found themselves on a tropical island in the South Pacific. As Sheilds looked back at the scenes that included nudity, she doubted it would be approved today.
"Never again will a movie be made like that," Shields said on the "Now What?" episode Tuesday, New York Post reported. "It wouldn't be allowed."
"Animals were hurt in the movie. We were spearing fish and all kinds of crazy things. Children are naked running down a beach," she added.
Although they were so young when they filmed the movie, Shields said the production team wanted them to be in love with each other and forge an off-screen romance.
"They wanted so desperately for us to fall in love with each other," she said.
Shields hadn't kissed anyone at the time. She admitted that she "didn't react well to being forced into feeling anything."
"Which was probably great for the film because that's what it was all about. You have to admit the chemistry between us was just amazing," Atkins responded. "There were a lot of great, great moments that went on there, and I think it was a lot of that innocence that came off in the film that made it work even more."
Shields used a body double for their sex scenes. Atkins didn't. However, he admitted that he was raised in a conservative family and that being naked in front of others was uncomfortable for him.
"After that movie, it was hard to keep my clothes on," he continued. "There were scenes where I was butt naked with you, if you remember, sliding down that slide and things like that. And that was a little awkward, but it was kind of funny for me because at this point in time I would just do it. But your reaction was [annoyed sounds]."
Aside from filming nude, the two actors recounted the challenging conditions on set. According to them, they had to endure swarms of bugs, crabs, rats and horses.
"It could never be made today," she said, Daily Mail reported.
"I was chafed up to no end," Atkins added.
The adaptation of Henry De Vere Stacpoole's 1908 novel received dismal reviews but managed to make $58.8 million at the global box office. Atkins received a Golden Globe Awards nomination for the new star of the year for his performance, while Shields was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for worst actress, according to Daily Mail.
