The Cleveland Browns have officially put an end to their revolving door of quarterbacks. The team has picked up the fifth-year option on Baker Mayfield’s contract, according to multiple reports, keeping the signal caller with the team through the 2022 season.

The No.1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Mayfield just completed his third season as Cleveland’s starter. Unless his production completely falls off, Mayfield will keep the job for another two years, something no Browns quarterback has done since the franchise was revived in 1999.

Before Mayfield took the reins in Week 3 of the 2018 season, 29 quarterbacks started for the Browns over the span of two decades. Seventeen of those quarterbacks started fewer than 10 games for Cleveland.

Mayfield has a winning record in his young career, going 23-22 in 45 straight starts. The 26-year-old led the Browns to their first 11-win season in 26 years last season. Cleveland also won its first playoff game since 1994.

The Browns are viewed as one of the top Super Bowl contenders in the AFC for the upcoming season.

Mayfield threw for 3.563 yards, 26 touchdowns, eight interceptions and a career-high 95.9 passer rating in 2020. The quarterback rebounded from a disappointing sophomore campaign, during which he threw nearly as many interceptions as touchdowns..

In 2021, Mayfield enters the final season of his four-year, $33 million rookie contract. The fifth-year option will pay Mayfield $18.8 million in 2022.

Mayfield ranks 22nd among quarterbacks in terms of their average yearly salary, according to Spotrac.
