Bryce Harper Rumors: Ranking The Phillies, Dodgers, Nationals, White Sox In Race For MLB Free Agent
The Bryce Harper Sweepstakes continues to drag on with 2019 spring training only a few weeks away. Close to one-third of the teams in baseball had been linked to the star outfielder in some fashion at the start of the offseason, but only a few teams appear to be serious contenders to sign MLB’s top free agent.
Here’s a ranking of the top four possible destinations for Harper:
1) Philadelphia Phillies
It’s seems to be a sure bet that Philadelphia will sign either Harper or Manny Machado. The Phillies reportedly prefered Machado when the offseason began, but they probably would’ve already made the infielder a lucrative offer if that were still the case. The latest reports indicate Harper might be Philadelphia’s top target. With the organization ready to spend “stupid” money, the Phillies will get the outfielder if they truly want him.
2) Washington Nationals
Washington is the only known team to have made Harper a concrete offer. It reportedly was a 10-year, $300 million contract, and there have been rumors that the Nationals are willing to give the 26-year-old even more money. Harper has been the face of the franchise over the last few years, and he might return to the team if he gets a few offers of equal value. With all the other moves Washington has made this offseason, keeping Harper could solidify their spot as one of the top World Series contenders.
3) Chicago White Sox
There seems to be a sizeable gap between the No.2 and No.3 spots on this list. Chicago’s representatives met with Harper a few months ago, but the team hasn’t made him an offer while they wait on Machado. The White Sox have never given out a contract close to what it would take to land Harper. If the Phillies blow Machado away with a big offer, Chicago could jump in with a strong play for the six-time All-Star.
4) Los Angeles Dodgers
Harper’s charisma and stardom are meant for a big stage like Los Angeles. Unfortunately for the outfielder, the Dodgers don’t seem interested in giving him a long-term deal. L.A. has cleared enough payroll this offseason to offer Harper a short-term contract with a high yearly salary, but the free agent isn’t expected to leave a 10-year offer on the table.
