Bryce Harper, Tony Romo Predict Next Destination For Right-Fielder
UPDATE: 11:20 p.m. EST- The Bryce Harper, Tony Romo discussion about the in-demand free agent’s next destination continued well into Monday with Texas Rangers now responding to the former quarterback’s comments.
In what is likely to be a long drawn joke, the Rangers have now thanked Romo for including them in the discussions for the most sought-after player this offseason by seeming to offer him payment for his services.
Original story:
Tom Brady made good of the saying "Cometh the hour, cometh the man" after stepping up in the fourth quarter and in overtime to lead the New England Patriots to the Super Bowl with a 37-31 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
The Patriots quarterback was trending after his game-winning heroics, but there was also another former quarterback who started trending immediately after the game concluded and it was former Dallas Cowboys signal caller Tony Romo.
Romo, who now works for CBS Sports as an analyst, proved he is one of the best NFL television experts around during his live commentary of the game between the Patriots and Chiefs. The former quarterback was calling plays much before it happened and fans were amazed at his accuracy.
The 38-year-old was predicting Brady’s actions before the play occurred and one that stood out was his 25-yard throw to Rob Gronkowski in overtime that led to the game-winning drive. Romo was certain the throw would land in the Patriots’ tight end’s hand after predicting the Chiefs safety’s movement before the play.
The former quarterback’s accuracy in being able to predict plays before it happened saw one longtime Cowboys fan and currently the most wanted free agent in baseball – Bryce Harper – make a joke with regard to his free agency by revealing that he had just called Romo to find out where he was playing next season.
Harper has been pursued by a number of franchises this offseason namely the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago White Sox and the Washington Nationals among others. He has met with all the interested teams but is yet to make a decision on his next destination.
The right-fielder, who was unanimously voted the MVP in 2015, is seeking a long-term deal north of $300 million and the speculation has been rife in recent months about which team will sign Harper. He decided to have a little fun after seeing Romo’s ability to call things before it happened.
“Confirmed: Just called Tony Romo to see where I’m going to play next year. #YoureAWizardTony,” Harper wrote after the Patriots’ win over the Chiefs via his official Twitter account.
Romo seemed to have taken some time off social media after Sunday’s games as he took almost 24 hours to reply to Harper’s tweet. But his reply has surely added to the speculation about where the in-demand outfielder will land up next season.
The Cowboys legend was clear in his prediction by telling Harper he will play for the Texas Rangers come the opening day of the new baseball season. It is all likely a joke between the two athletes, but it will certainly blow up if Harper does sign with the Rangers, who thus far have not been mentioned in the sweepstakes for the right-fielder.
Meanwhile, according to the New York Post, Romo’s services could be in high-demand if he continues to impress when he covers the Super Bowl for CBS in 13 days’ time. He will be out of contract with the broadcaster next year and it is expected there will be a scramble for his signature from other networks.
The report claims CBS were keen to avoid losing him to a rival and said to be preparing a new offer that will see the former quarterback earn a substantial increase from the $4 million range he currently makes.
