BTS’ RM On Why The Boy Band Needs To Move ‘Beyond Astonishing People’
While BTS has scored many firsts in terms of performances, in music charts, albums and concert sales, band leader RM said there is something the group has to improve on in terms of their future performances.
Describing how he felt about the group’s applauded performance of “Butter” at the 64th Grammy Awards in April, the 27-year-old singer said it is time for BTS to “assert their own image” and prioritize sending valuable messages to their throngs of supporters.
“It’s something I felt when I looked at artists like Lady Gaga or H.E.R. who devote their entire lives to their music: We need a message so we can be sure and assert our own image, too,” Kim Nam-Joon, or RM, said in his interview on Weverse magazine published Sunday.
“I think the performance of “Butter” we put on at the Grammy Awards astonished people. It was unique. I think it’s time for us to move beyond astonishing people and think again about what kind of messages we can send people now,” he continued.
At the 2022 Grammys, the septet delivered a James Bond-inspired performance that included an intricate jacket dance portion. The oldest member, Jin did not join the dance number and acted as a technician in another part of the stage. This was to prevent the “Super Tuna” singer from strain as he was recovering from a finger injury at that time.
RM also told the outlet that he needs to do a little soul-searching and find out the meaning and purpose of his work.
“I think I need to try taking a step away from myself for a minute. I think that way I’ll know what the work I’m doing right now means to me and what it is to me. So now I’m worried if I’m just doing the things I’m given and if I’m losing myself in a way,” he said.
“Our glory days aren’t now—they’re still ahead of us. I started making it thinking it would be a universal thing for us to sing about it, but I’m not sure how it’ll be received once the album comes out. I hope it takes on an allure of its own as it floats around between people,” he added in the interview.
