BTS was ecstatic after achieving a longtime dream Tuesday when the band became the first-ever K-pop act to be nominated at the Grammy Awards.
The boys of BTS are one step closer to their goal of winning a Grammy after they were nominated for best pop duo/group performance for their first all-English single, “Dynamite.” The song, which was their first Billboard Hot 100 no. 1, was on top of the Billboard chart for weeks after it was released on Aug. 21.
BTS' reaction to their Grammy nomination was caught on camera and shared on the band's Twitter account.
The septet, comprising Jimin, J-Hope, Jungkook, Jin, RM, Suga and V, later expressed their gratitude to their fans, crediting the ARMY for the incredible achievement.
"Thank you to everyone who listened to and sympathized with our music during the difficult times. Above all, it is ARMYs who made the miracle of being a Grammy candidate. I always appreciate and love you. Thank you @RecordingAcad for this great honor," BTS tweeted.
Though BTS' “Love Yourself: Tear” was nominated at the Grammys in 2019, the award, if they had won, would have gone to art director HuskyFox. But the South Korean boy band also made history last year by becoming the first K-pop act to present an award at the prestigious music awards show.
Also nominated for best pop duo/group performance at the 63rd Grammy Awards are Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande ("Rain On Me"), Taylor Swift ("Exile" featuring Bon Iver), Justin Bieber ("Intentions" featuring Quavo) and J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny and Tainy for "Un Dia (One Day)."
Meanwhile, though all the members received praise, it was the youngest member who received a bit more attention and commendation from the Korean media and the public following BTS' latest accomplishment. Jungkook, 23, was lauded in Korean online communities and social media platforms for being the youngest and most successful singer in K-pop history.
A post originally shared on Korean online community Theqoo listed Jungkook's achievements from BTS' debut year of 2013 to 2020, including a Rookie Award at 17 years old, the Gaon World Rookie Award at 18 and their first no. 1 on a music show at 19. (Note that Korean age is always one or two years more than international age.)
The netizen also pointed out that Jungkook was only 20 when BTS won its first Daesang, or the highest achievement a group or artist can get in South Korea's entertainment industry, at the Melon Music Awards 2016, and 21 when the band performed at the Billboard Awards and American Music Awards for the first time.
Jungkook was 21 when BTS gave a speech at the UN General Assembly for the first time and received the Order Of Cultural Merit from the South Korean government, 23 when the group was invited to become members of the Recording Academy and 24 when BTS achieved their first Billboard Hot 100 no. 1 and Grammy nomination.
Jungkook was also highly praised for his outstanding vocal performance in “Dynamite” and his intro is considered by some as the highlight of the hit track. His English pronunciation and his high note at the end of the song were described as “flawless” by fans.
