KEY POINTS
- BTS' V opened the year as the leader of the chart with his track, "Christmas Tree"
- "Christmas Tree" sold over 23,500 copies in the U.S.
- The track is part of the soundtrack of the drama "Our Beloved Summer"
It seems BTS members are just taking turns in ruling Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart, this time with V reaching the top mere weeks after rapper Suga took the lead.
On Tuesday, Kim Taehyung, also known as V, debuted his new single “Christmas Tree” at No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart that ranks the best-selling digital songs in the U.S. as compiled by MRC data (formerly known as Nielsen Music).
The Christmas-themed song, released on Dec. 24, 2021 as part of the soundtrack of Korean drama, “Our Beloved Summer,” sold over 23,500 copies according to MRC data. The second-bestselling tune in the country for the week is Gayle’s “abcdefu” which sold 11,000 copies.
“Christmas Tree” marks V’s first time leading Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart on his own. In 2020, he landed the No. 2 spot with his solo single, “Sweet Night” which is part of the official soundtrack of the hit Netflix series “Itaewon Class.”
V is now the first Korean soloist to debut a single at No. 1 on the said chart and “Christmas Tree” is the first Korean song ever to top the chart.
Just a few weeks ago, Suga became the first Korean soloist to debut a collaboration track at No. 1 on Billboard's Digital song sales chart with his single, “Girl of My Dreams” which he recorded as part of Juice WRLD’s posthumous album.
Psy became the first Korean soloist to enter the said chart with his massively popular hit, “Gangnam Style" in 2012, although it did not reach No. 1.
“Christmas Tree” also debuted at No. 79 on the Hot 100 before the end of December, making V the third BTS member to chart a solo song on the Hot 100. J-Hope was the first to make the chart as a solo artist with “Chicken Noodle Soup,” a collaboration track with Becky G. released in 2019, while Suga made the chart twice, with “Girl Of My Dreams” in 2021 and “Daechwita” in 2020. The latter was released under his soloist alias, AgustD.
Billboard charts tweeted an announcement on BTS members entering the Hot 100 as solo artists:
"Three members of @BTS_twt have now earned solo entries on the #Hot100: #JHope ("Chicken Noodle Soup") #Suga/#AgustD ("Girl of My Dreams," "Daechwita") #V ("Christmas Tree")," Billboard wrote.
As part of the septet, V has hit No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart nine times with “Butter,” “Permission to Dance,” “Idol” with Nicki Minaj, “Fake Love,” “On,” “Dynamite,” “Life Goes On,” “Film Out” and most recently with “My Universe,” with Coldplay.
