‘Bumblebee’ News: 'Teen Wolf' Star Dylan O'Brien Tapped To Voice 'Transformers' Autobot
“Teen Wolf” and “The Maze Runner” star Dylan O’Brien has landed his latest big screen role. Unfortunately, he won't actually be appearing in the movie.
O’Brien has been tapped to lend his voice for the movie “Bumblebee” as the Transformers autobot. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, “Transformers” franchise producer, recently opened up about how they chose O'Brien to voice Bumblebee, who has never been able to talk in the past “Transformers” movies.
“Dylan has that great quality in his voice of youthful exuberance, and also sort of trustworthiness," the producer told IGN. “I think those are the two qualities that we wanted Bumblebee to have.”
Di Bonaventura explained that because the new “Bumblebee” movie is an origin story, they felt that it was appropriate to hear the autobot’s voice. He also said that so far, the response to casting O’Brien as Bumblebee’s voice has been positive. He was glad that people seemed to think O’Brien’s voice was the appropriate one for the robot. “You never know, obviously that can be a sensitive thing for people. But it turns out, they imagine his voice that way,” he added.
According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), the new “Bumblebee” prequel is set in 1987. It is the sixth installment of the “Transformers” film series. The plot revolves around Bumblebee and a girl named Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld ). In the film’s official trailer, it shows the two characters meeting in California on a beach town junkyard. Unfortunately, they will be hunted down by Agent Burns (John Cena) and the Sector 7 government agency. While on the run, they will also come across other autobots who aren’t as nice as Bumblebee.
Aside from Steinfeld and Cena, other actors and actresses who make up the “Bumblebee” movie’s cast include Jason Drucker as Otis Watson, Pamela Adlon as Mrs. Watson, Jorge Lendeborg Jr. as Memo, John Ortiz as Powell and Rory Markham as Adams. It also stars Len Cariou, Kenneth Choi, Abby Quinn, Gracie Dzienny, Stephen Schneider, Rachel Crow and Ricardo Hoyos.
As for the rest of the voice cast, O’Brien is joined by Peter Cullen, who provides the voice of Optimus Prime. Meanwhile, Angela Bassett is the voice of Shatter. She portrays a Decepticon that can change into a Harrier Jump Jet and a red Plymouth Satellite. Justin Theroux also joins the cast as Dropkick’s voice. He plays a Decepticon that can transform into a Bell AH-1 SuperCobra and a blue AMC Javelin.
Aside from Theroux and Bassett, Jess Harnell lends his voice as the Decepticon scout Barricade. Plus, David Sobolov provides the voice of Blitzwing, a Decepticon who can change into a red/white McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II.
“Bumblebee” is scheduled for release on Dec. 21 in theaters across the United States.
