KEY POINTS

  • RB Leipzig has found a Julian Nagelsmann successor in Jesse Marsch
  • Nagelsmann agreed to a five-year contract with Bayern Munich
  • Marsch bested two other candidates for the German club's managerial position

Bundesliga club RB Leipzig is done searching for its next head coach just a day after incumbent Julian Nagelsmann's transfer to Bayern Munich.

Jesse Marsch, the current manager of Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg, is set to join the German club.

German site Kicker reported Marsch has committed to RB Leipzig after drawing interest from both Eintracht Frankfurt and Tottenham Hotspur.

The American will have bested two other candidates the 2016-17 Bundesliga runners-up reportedly sought: VfB Stuttgart's Pellegrino Matarazzo and VfL Wolfsburg's Oliver Glasner.

Glasner was reportedly the favorite to succeed Nagelsmann initially, but it is obvious RB Leipzig drew help from its sister club.

Salzburg already confirmed talks centered on Marsch's transfer as early as Wednesday through its spokesman Christian Kircher.

Marsch is under contract through the 2022 season, and a transfer could only be successful if both clubs involved agree to terms.

Meanwhile, Nagelsmann is headed to the seven-time defending Bundesliga titlists, agreeing to a five-year, €20 million ($32 million) deal that will run until 2026. He replaces Hans-Dieter Flick.

Before the impending transfer, Nagelsmann signed a four-year contract with Leipzig back in 2019.

He helped propel the club to a couple of milestones, including a first-ever semi-final finish in the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League.

Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer expressed that in spite of Nagelsmann only being 33 years old, the coach brings an impressive career to the German powerhouse.

“Julian Nagelsmann stands for a new generation of trainers. Despite his young age, he has had an impressive career. We are convinced that with Julian Nagelsmann we will build on the great successes of the past few years," Hainer said in an official statement.
