Cabin Door From A Canadair CL600 Lands On Westin Diplomat Resort And Spa's Golf Course In Hallandale Beach

Federal authorities are currently investigating how a door from a private jet landed on a South Florida golf course on Thursday afternoon.

The Federal Aviation Administration reported that the main cabin door from a Canadair CL600 landed on the 16 fairway of the Westin Diplomat Resort and Spa's golf course in Hallandale Beach, reported the Associated Press.

The incident reportedly occurred after the jet took off from Opa-Locka Executive Airport. There were no passangers on plane.

The co-owner and his party had just exited the plane at Opa Locka. Jeffery Berkowitz, a prominent Miami developer and philanthropist, was one of nine individuals on the plane, including two of his sons and his wife. They were returning from a conference in Las Vegas

There were no injuries reported, but Berkowitz said he was very grateful. It really is a miracle, reported the Sun-Sentinel.

The pilot was flying the plane to Pompano Beach Municipal Airport. Once the door fell off, it was diverted to Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. It landed safely around 4:10 p.m.

We are, and will be, cooperating with the investigation into how this inexplicable malfunction occurred, Berkowitz said, reported the Sun-Sentinel.. I'm just really grateful that nobody got hurt.

Berkowitz said that for as long as he owned the plane he always felt safe, but is eager to find out what went wrong.

I'm anxious to see the results of the investigation, he said.

The door fell in between two high-rises, hitting trees as it fell to the ground. It then skidded approximately 15 feet before it came to a stop on the golf course, reported WSVN.

Luckily for golf enthusiasts who frequent the course, the door fell on one of two days of the year when the course is closed for maintenance.

It's the stairway from heaven, said Ed Wall, the general manger of the resort, reported Fox. Fortunately there was no one on the grounds at the time and we're very glad that no one got hurt. The course is ringed by private condo towers, so we are very fortunate that it landed where it did.

Ricky Nelson is a resident who lives nearby. He said he was glad he did not live in any of the high rises.

I'm glad I don't live on the eighth or the seventh floor coz it probably would have went straight through, he said, reported WSVN.

A spokeswoman for Bombardier which made the jet said there is only one other incidence that she knew of when a cabin door fell off. The company is also looking into what went wrong along with the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.

We still don't know why this happened, Danielle Boudreau said.
