Police in California are looking for a white man and woman after they were caught on video defacing a “Black Lives Matter” mural on the Fourth of July.

In a press release issued by the Martinez Police Department Sunday (July 5), community members were able to obtain a permit from the City to paint a “Black Lives Matter” mural in front of the Contra Nostra County courthouse in Martinez, California.

After the mural was completed, the white couple showed up. Witnesses recorded a video of the woman using black paint on the mural – which was painted in bright yellow – and a roller to cover a letter in the word “Black.” The video shifted and showed the man recording the woman while speaking to the crowd.

At one point, the man, who wore a red shirt that read “Trump Four More Years,” was caught saying “We're sick of this narrative.”

“There is no oppression, there is no racism. It's a leftist lie. It's a lie from the media, the liberal left,” added the man, through NBC News.

The network also pointed out that the woman said “Keep this s--- in f------ New York. This isn't happening in my town.”

“The community spent a considerable amount of time putting the mural together only to have it painted over in a hateful and senseless manner."

"The City of Martinez values tolerance and the damage to the mural was divisive and hurtful,” said police chief Manjit Sappal in the press release, adding that the woman asked the man to hand her another can of paint so that she could continue painting over the mural.

“It appeared that the couple came to the mural with cans of paint and a roller with the specific purpose of vandalizing over the mural,” Sappal added.

Police said the couple was gone by the time they arrived at the scene. Onlookers meanwhile provided authorities with a photograph of the suspect's vehicle and described it to be a Nissan pickup with a camper shell and the word “Nicole” on the right side of the tailgate.

The “public art project” was organized by the local group Martizians for Black Lives. More than 100 members, who all wore face masks and observed social distancing, took part in the five-hour mural, said KRON 4.
