Camilla Parker Bowles won the crowd on her wedding day with Prince Charles.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall had a hard time winning the support of the public due to their affair while the future king was still married to Princess Diana. During the Princess of Wales’ infamous Panorama interview, she said that “there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

When Princess Diana passed away, Prince Charles and Camilla didn’t publicize their romance immediately because the sympathy of the people was with Princess Diana. Queen Elizabeth II also didn’t tolerate their affair.

There was reportedly a time when Her Majesty didn’t want to see Camilla at any royal function. Prince Charles and Camilla’s scandal also caused a rift between the Queen and the heir.

In early 2000, Prince Charles and Camilla went public with their relationship. When they announced their engagement, the press had an absolute field day with public opinion polls revealing that they were not okay with Prince Charles marrying his mistress. One woman even stood outside Prince Charles and Camilla’s residence at Clarence House only to yell at Prince Charles that he would never be king.

However, things changed on their wedding day. According to Penny Junor, the duchess was hesitant about their union when their wedding date came but Camilla won the crowd.

“She looked endearingly frightened when she stepped out of the car with Charles and waved briefly before disappearing into Guildhall,” Junor said.

“But it was clear the crowd was on her side.”

Queen Elizabeth II didn’t attend Prince Charles and Camilla’s civil wedding ceremony. According to Francesca Specter, a journalist for Express, the Queen put her role as head of the church before her role as a mother to the groom. Although the Queen was not present at the registrar, she attended the service of blessing at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

The public has since started to warm up to Prince Charles and Camilla due to their enduring love. In fact, even Princess Diana’s fans now support them.

“Princess Diana will always be my [heart] because she is only the reason I even cared about the royal family but Camilla and Charles have always been in love so I have warmed up to her over the years,” one user wrote on Twitter.
