Apple is up against a breed of new Android smartphones from HTC, Samsung and Motorola. These phone makers have Android phones with super specifications on all the major networks - AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile.
Motorola has a strong portfolio of Android phones which offer differentiating features like docking, world phone (unlocked) and QWERTY phones. The top-notch phones include the recently launched Motorola Photon, Atrix and Droid Bionic besides the upgraded version of Droid X and Droid 2 in the form of Droid X2 and Droid 2 Global.
Here is line-up of top Motorola phones which Apple's iPhone 5 will meet when it comes in September:
Motorola Atrix 4G
The star of the CES 2011 event features a 4-inch display with 960x540 screen resolution. It is powered by a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and runs Motorola's customized Android 2.2 or Froyo build Motoblur. The phone offers 1GB RAM and 16GB internal memory. It sports a 5MP rear-facing and a front-facing VGA camera. It offers 720p video capture capability. The phone weighs 4.8oz and is about 0.43-inch thick. The phones differentiating factor is that the phone comes with an 11.6-inch laptop dock. The phone has software called Webtop which fires the laptop when the phone is placed in the docking cradle. The software provides Firefox browser, flash support and doc editing. Thus a user can access the content which resides in the phone on a bigger screen through the laptop dock and an HD Dock. The laptop dock is only available with Motorola Atrix.
Also recently MobileFun reported that Motorola will be launching a SIM-free or unlocked Atrix model in Europe from Aug. 2.
Motorola Photon:
The recently launched Motorola Photon sports a 4.3-inch display with 960x540 screen resolution. The phone is powered by the thumping 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset. It offers 1GB RAM and 16GB internal memory. Photon optimizes Google's phone specific OS, the Android 2.3 or Gingerbread. The phone also packs in an 8MP rear-facing camera with 720p video capture capability. It also comes fitted with a front-facing VGA camera. Photon weighs 5.6oz and is 0.5-inch thick. Motorola's new superphone Photon which will run on Sprint network also runs the Webtop software and offers docking features. However it does not come with the 11.6-inch laptop dock which accompanies its older cousin Atrix. Nonetheless coupled with an HD Dock Photon content can still be accessed on a large screen or a desktop. The phone is a worldphone as it offers both global 4G connectivity and 3G supports. It can thus be used on CDMA and WiMAX in US and GSM internationally.
Motorola Bionic
It is reported that the phone which will be featured on Verizon's 4G LTE network is due to be launched in the third quarter. Droid Bionic was first showcased at CES 2011 in Las Vegas. The phone features a 4.5-inch display with 960x540 screen resolution. It runs on Tegra 2 dual-core processor but unlike its kin Atrix and Photon, features lesser 512MB RAM. It offers 16GB internal memory. Bionic sports an 8MP rear-facing camera with 720p and a front-facing VGA camera. The phone weighs about 5.5 oz and is 0.53-inch thick. It is expected that the phone will also get Android Gingerbread update and Motoblur 3D when it is launched.
