Can Oprah Winfrey Stop Trump? 2020 Run Could Yield First Black Woman President

One of the world’s most powerful billionaires, Oprah Winfrey, said in a recent interview that she is considering a run for the White House especially after President Donald Trump's victory in the November 2016 election. Winfrey would be the nation's first black woman president and first woman president if she won.

Winfrey, 63, spoke with financier David Rubenstein in December in an episode of Bloomberg’s “The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations” that premiered Wednesday. When Rubenstein asked the legendary TV host about whether she’d run for president Winfrey said, “I actually never thought that was — I never considered the question, even a possibility, I just thought ‘Oh, oh.’” Rubenstein responded, “Right, because it’s clear that you don’t need government experience to be elected president of the United States, right?”

Winfrey, who was a Hillary Clinton supporter in the 2016 race and campaigned for Barack Obama in 2008, agreed with Rubenstein about Trump’s lack of government experience to run the country considering he had never before held public office prior to his election victory in November. “I thought, ‘Oh gee, I don’t have the experience, I don’t know enough.’ Now I’m thinking, ‘Oh, oh,’” Winfrey said.

In fact, shortly after Trump won the election, filmmaker Michael Moore appeared on CNN's "State of the Union" and suggested an Oprah run. "Democrats would be better off if they ran Oprah or Tom Hanks," he said. "Why don't we run beloved people?"

The media mogul also spoke on her 25 years hosting her American syndicated tabloid talk show "The Oprah Winfrey Show" that aired from 1986 to 2011. She said she wanted to show her viewers "we really are more alike than we are different."

Winfrey, who was once a local news reporter, has a net worth of $3 billion, according to Forbes. In addition to her being one of the richest African-American woman billionaires, she funded her cable TV network in 2011, The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) entirely out-of-pocket.
