Thousands of organizers, activists and citizens rejecting President-elect Donald Trump’s polarizing campaign rhetoric are vowing to stand together in unity on Inauguration Day to obstruct the swearing in of the 45th president of the United States. Protests and events are scheduled to take place throughout the nation’s capitol, with demonstrators promising to block security checkpoints and parade routes while Trump assumes the Oval Office as the least popular incoming-president in modern history.

Protest organizers have called for safe and peaceful protests Friday, including a three-hour "Love-a-thon" that will be live streamed on Facebook while raising money for non-profits like Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union and Earthjustice. The Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (ANSWER) is taking a somewhat more aggressive approach toward halting the Inauguration in its tracks, as protesters are scheduled to arrive at the Navy memorial landmark at 7 a.m. EST for a full day of demonstrations.

"It is critically important that we keep building a larger grassroots movement against war, militarism, racism, anti-immigrant scapegoating and neoliberal capitalism’s assault against workers’ living standards and the environment," a statement on the group's site advertising the event read. The mass protest is using the hashtag #InaugurateTheResistance on social media to raise awareness.

Whether demonstrations will prove to have any impact on the presidential festivities remain unclear. D.C. officials are warning for disruptions in transit service, as well as the potential for blocked roadways and landmark destinations.

"If people think it’s going to be business as usual on Inauguration Day, in terms of travel, they’re going to run into some real headaches," Leif Dormsjo, D.C.'s director of the D.C. Department of Transportation, told WTOP.

At least 20,000 people have RSVP’d to the "Not My President" silent protest, set to take place just outside of the U.S. Capitol building. Occupy Inauguration will be held at the nearby Malcolm X Park. The permitted rally will feature prominent speakers and organizers, from former Green Party candidate Jill Stein to the Black Lives Matter movement. The demonstration will then transcend into a march toward McPherson Square, followed by an additional rally at 2 p.m. EST.

DisruptJ20 is also planning on massive "widespread civil resistance" throughout the city, beginning with a permitted march at 12:00 p.m. EST at Columbus circle. The coalition of organizations will also host a number of demonstrations throughout D.C.

Despite the thousands of protests taking place inside the capitol and across the country, Trump’s Inauguration is going on as-planned. Inauguration Day will immediately be followed by the women’s march in Washington D.C. Saturday, reportedly expected to bring in many more citizens than Trump’s celebration.
