  • Undefeated light heavyweight champ Dmitry Bivol said Canelo Alvarez is just a man and a boxer
  • Bivol said he has no problems dropping down to super-middleweight division
  • Canelo will not face his rival Gennady Golovkin next

An undefeated boxing champ pointed out that multi-division champ Canelo Alvarez is just a man and a boxer.

Amid the global lockdown caused by coronavirus, news broke that Canelo will finally face Gennady Golovkin in a highly anticipated trilogy match. However, it was recently reported that Golovkin will not face his middleweight nemesis Canelo for a third time. Instead, “GGG” was booked for a different fight and will take on his IBF mandatory challenger, Kamil Szeremeta. With Golovkin already locked for a fight, Canelo was left with an array of top-tier middleweights. But some in boxing believe that one of his next possible opponents could be WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.

For over two and a half years, Bivol has managed to defend his title 6 times. And now, the Russian boxing star is looking forward to extend his undefeated record by taking on established world champions like Callum Smith and Canelo.

Speaking on the latest episode of Matchroom Boxing’s Podcast “The Lockdown Tapes” (via 15rounds.com), Bivol revealed that he is willing to drop down to the 168-pound division to challenge Smith and finally become a two-weight world champion. While Bivol is open to fighting Smith at super-middleweight, he made a bold statement explaining why he doesn’t prioritize Canelo in the process.

According to Bivol, Canelo was just a man and a boxer who could generate a big money fight.

“Canelo at Super-Middleweight is a big fight but everyone wants to fight him. He is just a man, he is just a boxer. You can earn money with him and it is a good opportunity to show your boxing skills to the whole world because of his massive fan base,” Bivol explained.

“I would prefer the fight at 175 pounds as it’s my weight but I could move down to 168lbs, that’s not a big problem for me. I had breakfast before my last fight on weigh-in day and think I have the reserves to come down,” Bivol added.

Bivol boasts a flawless light heavyweight record of 17-0, 11 coming by way of KO/TKO. ESPN recently reported that Bivol is one of the champions who is worthy of being handed a blockbuster showdown with Canelo.

The 29-year-old started gaining popularity for his aggressive fighting style. But as he experienced over time, Bivol developed a fighting style in which he methodically telegraph his opponents and win every round through strategic boxing. Experts speculate that the said methodical style could give Canelo problems as he is much effective as an explosive counter-puncher.
