Canelo Alvarez Loses Lawsuit Against Golden Boy Promotions, DAZN In First Form

Canelo Alvarez’s lawsuit against DAZN and Golden Boy Promotions was dismissed in the first form by the U.S. District Court in the Central District of California after the boxing star’s legal team is reported to have failed in making a proper designation with regards to the defendants.

“Because the Complaint alleges the citizenship of the LLC defendants as if they were corporations, rather than as limited liability companies, the Complaint has not properly alleged the citizenship of those parties,” said district judge Percy Anderson, per the Boxing Insider.

“Absent unusual circumstances, a party seeking to invoke diversity jurisdiction should be able to allege affirmatively the actual citizenship of the relevant parties. As a result, Plaintiffs’ allegations are not sufficient to invoke this Court’s diversity jurisdiction.”

The ruling came just a few days after Canelo accused DAZN and Golden Boy of failing to honor the terms of their deal.

The said contract was signed by Canelo in 2018 as the parties agreed that the pound for pound superstar is entitled to earn $365 million over an 11-fight deal.

The Mexican champion sought at least $280 million in damages in his lawsuit filed at the district court on Tuesday.

"This lawsuit arises from the breach of the single largest contract in this history of boxing, and one of the largest in all of sport," the complaint stated, via ESPN.

In a personal statement, Canelo justified his decision to sue his broadcaster and promoter, saying it’s his desperate way in order to finally make a return inside the ring.

"I'm the pound for pound number one in the world. I'm not scared of any opponent in the ring, and I'm not going to let failures of my broadcaster or promoters keep me out of the ring," said the 30-year-old, who has not fought since beating Sergey Kovalev in November 2019.

"I filed the lawsuit so I can get back to boxing and give my fans the show they deserve."

Oscar De La Hoya, the founder of Golden Boy Promotions, took to Twitter to react on the dismissal of the case. Claiming that the dispute on the lawsuit is just an “error”, the retired boxing star is hoping that the harmony between the parties involved would still be restored soon.

“While yesterday’s order does not end the case, we are hopeful that this error will allow us to reset and refocus on what’s important – working together to get Canelo back in the ring against a top opponent ASAP,” he wrote.

DAZN has yet to comment on the matter, but the legal battle is still expected to continue as Alvarez is granted about two weeks to amend his claim.
