Canelo Alvarez Next Fight May Be At Wembley Stadium
Canelo Alvarez is fresh off a win over Rocky Fielding last weekend, a fight that drew a lot of criticism. Many questioned the reason behind the selection of his opponent, but the latest word out right now is that there are two deserving names next.
One of those opponents is reportedly Daniel Jacobs. As covered in a previous post, BarbosaBox said that the potential fight could go down on May 4, a day before Cinco de Mayo. The clash makes plenty of sense since Jacobs is the same guy who faced Gennady Golovkin and, in the eyes of many, should have won that fight.
Now a new name has been tossed in the mix in WBA champion Callum Smith. In a report from the Sun, Golden Boy president Eric Gomez allegedly said that they are open to going to the UK and probably fighting Callum. He also added that Wembley would be huge for them.
With Oscar De La Hoya bent on making Alvarez a global name, a potential fight at the Wembley Stadium should be huge. The Mexican brawler has never fought outside North America, but seeing how British boxing fans come out in droves may have ignited the idea.
For his part, Smith is also looking to defend his title at Anfield and admits that aiming for Alvarez is something hard to overlook. Paired with the overwhelming following over there, it is a clash that could sell and boost the stock of both pugs.
But Canelo's next fight may be left at the hands of his promoters. Jacobs was seen as a worthy adversary, but an even bigger fight (and fight purse) looms if Smith gets the nod, according to Boxing News 24.
Other than Jacobs and Smith, Alvarez has the luxury of considering other fighters. That includes a potential Golovkin trilogy, even if Saul came out victorious with his dominating performance in their rematch.
Some other names worth considering are Demetrius Andrade, Billy Joe Saunders and David Lemieux. Andrade is unbeaten and can give Canelo the chance to add the WBO strap to his collection. Saunders is a familiar name in the mix, known to target only Alvarez and Golovkin. Lemieux is another interesting opponent for as long as he is able to address his weight issues, Bad Left Hook noted.
Alvarez can choose from among those names for his next bout. But one thing that boxing fans are requesting is seeing a deserving fighter exchanging blows with the Mexican brawler.
