KEY POINTS

  • Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin 3 is expected to happen in September
  • Oscar De La Hoya makes his bold Alvarez vs. Golovkin 3 prediction
  • The two bitter rivals have engaged in a war of words

Oscar De La Hoya has weighed in on the looming third showdown between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin.

After copping a thrilling TKO win over Japan’s Ryota Murata , Golovkin is now on course to finally cross paths with Alvarez for the third time around.

The bout is expected to take place this September, provided that Alvarez will get the better of his upcoming opponent and WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.

It can be recalled that the first clash between Alvarez and Golovkin in 2017 ended in a controversial draw.

A year later, the pair delighted the fans with a rematch in which the Mexican superstar secured a majority decision victory to become the unified middleweight champion.

If the trilogy fight comes to fruition, the 40-year-old Golovkin will be coming in with an eight-year age disadvantage as Alvarez will be 32 years old by that time.

For Alvarez’s former promoter Oscar De La Hoya, this will be the biggest problem of “GGG” that “Canelo” will surely capitalize on.

“I think Canelo knocks out Triple G in the third fight,” De La Hoya recently told BoxingScene.com “Look, I promoted both fights [in 2017 and 2018]. I think Triple G has lost a step or two since their [September 2018] rematch. That will be the difference when they meet again. I think Canelo beats him even easier this time and knocks him out.”

“Look, Triple G is up there in age. He’s up there in age, he’s been in wars. He’s not a young 40-year-old. He’s a true 40-year-old fighter who will show his age in that third fight with Canelo.”

There is no official announcement yet as to which weight class Alvarez and Golovkin will fight at.

However, the Mexican’s camp has previously stressed that they want the potential trilogy match to happen in the 168-pound division.

As for the fighters, shots have already been fired ahead of the highly-anticipated third fight.

Alvarez previously claimed that Golovkin “talks a lot of s---” about their rivalry and warned to give the Kazakh fighter what he deserves once he’s done with Bivol.

Golovkin, on the other hand, hit back and called Alvarez “unprofessional” for making such comments about him.

“First of all, there’s no bad blood from my side, I’m not taking it personally,” Golovkin told The Sun. “But commenting on his approach, he says it’s personal, where has he been after our second fight?”

“For so long, why did he try to accumulate that bad blood? That is kind of unprofessional, too low when a fighter describes his approach to a fight in that way.”
