Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin 2: Boxers Make Predictions
The highly-anticipated rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin finally takes place this week as the two will battle it out Sept. 15 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council and International Boxing Organization middleweight titles.
The first fight of course, was a boxing classic that was ultimately marred by the scorecards of the judges as while many felt Golovkin had successfully defended his middleweight titles, the contest was ultimately deemed a split-decision draw.
The rematch was slated for May 5; however, Alvarez tested positive for clenbuterol twice in February. The 28-year-old cited contaminated Mexican meat as the reason for his failed drug test, but Golovkin was having none of it.
The unbeaten Kazakh labeled Alvarez a lifelong cheater and ultimately pressured the Nevada State Athletic Commission into suspending the Mexican for six months.
Golovkin would, meanwhile, successfully defend his titles against Vanes Martirosyan on the May date to remain active but would later get stripped of his International Boxing Federation title for not fighting his mandatory opponent in Sergei Derevyanchenko instead.
He would then demand a 50-50 split of the rematch with Alvarez, compared to the initial 65-35 split, which almost put an end to negotiations.
However, in the end, boxing fans will finally get to see the biggest fight of the year and it's no surprise things are extremely personal between the pair, especially compared to their first meeting that saw competitive respect toward each other.
The whole boxing world has made their predictions as to who will win the rematch. Below are some of the boxers who have made theirs:
Who believes Canelo Alvarez will win?
Andre Ward, former unified light heavyweight champion
"The first fight was extremely close. Historically the guy who can do more, who has more tricks in his bags, so to speak, they typically do better in the rematch. And that is Canelo in this case. I think Golovkin is getting a little older, he's 35, 36, [and] he’s got miles on him. I think Canelo is going to make the adjustments and show a different side, and could possibly get his hand raised."
Mikey Garcia, International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council lightweight champion
"I think Canelo wins, he will box intelligently, and he will win a decision. Golovkin, I think there is not much that [he] can change. He will come with attack and heart, but Canelo will win that fight."
Shawn Porter, World Boxing Council welterweight champion
"Something’s telling me Canelo’s gonna win this one. I thought GGG won the first one but some of those rounds were like ‘Aight, I’m giving that one to GGG,’ you know, and there were honestly other rounds where you be like ‘Aight I’m giving that to Canelo, not even gonna think about it.’"
"I think that GGG lacks defense and I think he got hit a lot from the outside and I think that Canelo’s gonna be a little sharper, faster, and more responsible on defense with this one. I think he’ll be ready for the power that obviously GGG brings as well as the punches that he brings. Once you’ve seen the speed and velocity that somebody’s bringing at you, you can make adjustments. So I’m expecting Canelo to make the adjustments."
Miguel Cotto, former four-weight world champion
"It's going to be a difficult fight to choose. I will sit down to enjoy the fight, I understand and I know that Canelo is going to eliminate all of those faults that he had in the first fight and he will present a smarter fighting pattern in this rematch... I'm going with Canelo."
Who believes Gennady Golovkin will win?
Amir Khan, former unified junior welterweight champion
"With him going into the fight with GGG, a lot of people see size difference. You can see a massive size difference from the last fight and this fight. So let’s see. But if he’s [Canelo] off and he was on clenbuterol last time and he’s off of it for this fight, I see GGG stopping Canelo in the later rounds."
Daniel Jacobs, former World Boxing Association middleweight champion
"I think it'll be a repeat of the last fight. I think GGG will win and he'll be given the victory if he do what he needs to do, pick up and make adjustments of the last fight."
Billy Joe Saunders, World Boxing Organization middleweight champion
"I think this time it might be a bit different. I think they're going to get an early kickoff and I think we're going to see a lot more action. Golovkin maybe from [rounds] 8-10 or if not, points."
Carl Frampton, former super bantamweight and featherweight champion
"It's going to be a close fight again. Obviously we all know the circumstances surrounding the last fight. I think, I hope Golovkin wins the fight."
David Lemieux, former International Boxing Federation middleweight champion
"They’re both great fighters. Canelo, I wouldn’t be surprised if he brings an upset. It’s a close fight, but I think Golovkin takes it again."
