Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin 2018: Does GGG Have Better Shot At A Win In The Rematch?

In one of the most eagerly anticipated rematches in years, Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (38-0-1) and Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2) will battle on Sept. 15 in Las Vegas for the WBA (Super), WBC and IBO middleweight title.s With the fight a little more than a month away, oddsmakers have maintained that Golovkin is the favorite.

Golovkin is listed at -175 odds, while Alvarez is the underdog at +145, according to Vegas Insider. In June, oddsmakers at Bovada listed Golovkin at -190 and Alvarez at +155.

The current odds are not much different from where they were a month before the first fight, which ended in a draw.

Leading up to the September 2017 fight, Golovkin had opened as a -160 favorite. But a month before the fight his odds had dropped to -150, with Alvarez listed as a +130 underdog, according to the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. Other online sportsbooks had Golovkin as a -155 or -160 favorite.

Alvarez dismissed the notion of favorites in an interview with International Business Times in the summer of 2017.

"I really don’t think about that. I don’t worry about that," Alvarez said. "I’ve probably been the favorite in most of my fights, but I really don’t pay any mind to that. What I worry about is being in shape, being trained at 100 percent and being ready for the fight."

The upcoming fight promises to be another tactical and bruising fight. In the first fight, Golovkin landed 218 punches, compared to Alvarez's 169, but Alvarez landed more power punches than Golovkin, 114-110.

The first fight was controversial, not necessarily because it ended in a draw but rather due to one specific scorecard. The scorecards of 115-113 for Golovkin by Dave Moretti and 114-114 by Don Trella were in sharp contrast to the 118-110 scorecard for Alvarez by Adelaide Byrd.

Alvarez, who in March tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol, has been inactive since the first fight. Golovkin, however, made quick work of Vanes Martirosyan with a second-round knockout in a Cinco de Mayo fight in Los Angeles.
