KEY POINTS

  • Canelo Alvarez awaits Gennady Golovkin for a potential third fight
  • Alvarez needs to defend the WBC title against Yildirim first
  • Golovkin is open to a third fight with Alvarez but has other goals

After hacking out a dominating win over Callum Smith, Canelo Alvarez is moving forward to see who will be next.

The Mexican put on an impressive performance and dealt the Brit his first boxing career loss. Now attention shifts to what the 30-year-old has planned.

At the top of the list is a potential third fight with Gennady Golovkin. Observers were quick to note how DAZN masterfully scheduled the two fights back-to-back.

Talk about a potential Alvarez vs. Golovkin fight that has not been touched for some time now though both are open to clashing once again.

Between Alvarez and Golovkin, the former was open to facing the Kazakhstani for the third time. He sounded more optimistic than "GGG" and assured everyone that it was a fight he is interested in.

"I don't run from nobody. I just showed that I fought against the best," Canelo said to DAZN via Boxingscene. "Of course, if he is going to take that fight, I'll take it. But I showed the world that I fight against the best."

Alvarez is not short on options as far as whoever he faces next. Before booking the Smith fight, he was supposed to face Avni Yildirim who is the mandatory challenger to the WBC title.

Unless he chooses to vacate the belt, the Turkish pug is next on the list.

However, the Mexican also mentioned in a previous post that he had short-term goals. This is about winning all the titles in the 168-pound weight class.

However, all that could be altered if a deal with Golovkin progresses.

Golovkin himself was coming off a big win over challenger Kamil Szeremeta. Like Alvarez, he had a dominating performance over the previously unbeaten boxer.

With Alvarez and Golovkin dominating their respective foes, the logical route is to set the third fight.

Golovkin is also open to the idea but explains that he too has other goals moving forward, Boxingscene reported. He is not paying too much attention to it though that can change instantly.
