Canelo vs. Golovkin III Rumors: GGG Calls Alvarez 'Yellow' For Ducking Trilogy Fight
Gennady Golovkin, one of the feared boxers in the middleweight to date, has thrown shade at rival Canelo Saul Alvarez for not wanting to face him a third time. The Kazakhstan knockout artist hurled some verbal insults to the Mexican, calling him an "amarillo" (which means yellow).
Golovkin suffered the only loss of his career to Alvarez. This happened in 2018 when the 37-year-old pug lost via majority decision to the Mexican brawler and lost the WBA, WBC and IBO titles, Reuters reported. It was a rematch between the two fighters following a controversial draw in 2017.
A third fight between the two seemed farfetched. Ironically, Alvarez was open to the idea of a third meeting although he stressed how it should be Golovkin doing the pursuit. Much of this was covered in a previous report.
Finally realizing that he wants a shot at redemption, Golovkin is now in hot pursuit of a trilogy. But it appears that the Mexican does not have GGG at the top of his list of next opponents. Now, Golovkin feels that the 29-year-old boxer is afraid of him, TMZ Sports reported.
"Everybody push him, he said 'No.' I can't bring him!" said Golovkin. "I don't want to touch his name because it's horrible for boxing, for [the] sport."
Golovkin was hoping to face Alvarez as early as Sept. 14. The Mexican boxing champion elected to move up in weight and face Sergey Kovalev instead. That fight is set for Nov. 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. GGG feels it was the only option left for his arch-nemesis after refusing a trilogy fight which he and DAZN executive chairman John Skipper wanted, Boxingscene.com reported.
It remains to be seen if talks for an Alvarez vs. Golovkin III will surface moving forward. For now, Golovking is focusing on his next opponent, Sergiy Derevyanchenko. His Ukrainian foe holds a 13-1 record, 10 coming of knockouts.
Derevyanchenko's only loss was dealt by Daniel Jacobs - the same man who proved to the world that anyone could last a full 12-rounds against GGG. Golovkin can pour out his frustrations on the Ukrainian and build a case for a potential Alvarez vs. Golovkin III.
