A Russian cannibal killer who murdered his three drunk friends, chopped up their body parts, cooked and ate them has been sentenced to life in prison.
Eduard Seleznev, 51, of Arkhangelsk, western Russia, admitted to stabbing his friends aged 59, 43 and 34 to death and consuming their meat on separate occasions between 2016 and 2017, reported The Scottish Sun.
Seleznev, known as the "Arkhangelsk Cannibal," sliced up the unnamed victims to remove the body parts he wanted to eat and stored them in plastic bags. He dumped the rest of the remains in a local river. The court was told that he also had other bizarre eating habits, including cooking and eating cats, dogs, birds and other small animals found on the streets.
His lawyers had appealed the decision but the Russian Supreme Court sentenced him to life imprisonment without any possibility of parole.
Seleznev reportedly moved into one of the victim's apartment. To avert suspicions, he convinced the victim's parents that their son had gone to another city to work. He repeated the same story to the investigators who were looking for the missing victim.
His other two victims had no relatives to raise questions about their whereabouts, reported LAD Bible. But the police eventually discovered the body parts of the three victims. They were reportedly in the advanced stage of decomposition and were difficult to identify.
Seleznev was previously convicted for double murder but was released after serving 13 years in jail.
The Russian law does not have a separate code for cannibalism, so Seleznev was charged with murder and misuse of body parts. The court sentenced him after the psychiatrists declared him sane and fully responsible for his actions.
In a similar incident in Texas, a 23-year-old man was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to attempted coercion and enticement of a minor and distribution of child pornography. Alexander Nathan Barter reportedly posted an advertisement on a dark web site expressing his interest in necrophilia and cannibalism, reported ABC-affiliated news outlet KLTV.
An undercover officer disguised as the father of a 13-year-old daughter responded to the advertisement. Barter was arrested after he expressed his interest in raping, killing and eating the child during their correspondence.
