The Washington Capitals maintained their perfect start to the NHL season with an impressive 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday.

Alex Ovechkin snapped out of his early-season malaise with two goals and the Capitals improved to 6-0-0 to build on their franchise-best record for opening a season.

It's always nice to score goals, said Ovechkin, who had scored just once in his previous five games. I had a couple chances the last couple games but I didn't score. Finally it goes in. I'm kind of happy for me.

Philadelphia (4-1-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead when Claude Giroux scored at 14:25 in the first period but it was all Washington from there.

Capitals goaltender Tomas Vokoun finished with 40 saves and did not allow another score until Sean Couturier put in a wrist shot with 15 seconds remaining in the game.

By then the visiting Capitals had scored five in a row to hand the Flyers their first loss in regulation this season.

Mathieu Perreault and Ovechkin netted for the Capitals in the first period, and after a scoreless second, Roman Hamrlik, Ovechkin and Joel Ward netted goals in a two-and-a-half minute blitz in the third.

Ilya Bryzgalov, acquired by Philadelphia in the off-season to address the team's goaltending struggles from a year ago, stopped 23 of 28 shots.

Vokoun was also an off-season acquisition and has performed well with his new team.

Especially with this team, I'm going to be faced with different kinds of games, Vokoun said. Another learning experience for me, to learn how to deal with some periods you get one, two shots, some you get 18.

Whatever comes my way, my job is to stop the pucks. That's what I worry about.
