Casey Anthony Trial: Will justice prevail?
The murder trial of Casey Anthony, who has been charged with killing her two-year old daughter Caylee, kicked off, Tuesday, with opening statements from the prosecutors and defense lawyers even as people wondered whether justice will prevail.
Caylee's decomposed body was found five months after she was reported missing in July 2008 and it is believed that she died likely from suffocation as duct tape wrapped her nose and mouth three times.
At first, Casey said a baby sitter kidnapped the girl. However, on Tuesday, Jose Baez, attorney of Casey Anthony, said Caylee drowned in a family swimming pool.
However, Prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick isn't buying the story. Burdick claims Casey had killed her daughter and even pretended to her parents that Caylee was with her all the time.
The only evidence indicating the cause of death of Caylee Marie Anthony are the three pieces of duct tape covering her nose and mouth, Burdick said in her opening statement.
But Baez said the focus of the trial is not to talk about how inappropriate Casey acted.
We're here to find out exactly how Caylee died. That's the key issue throughout this entire case, he said.
Baez also said George Anthony, Casey's father, knew about Caylee's death and kept it hidden.
George Anthony took certain steps to make sure he was as far away from this situation and that Casey would end up taking the blame for this, Baez said.
During Tuesday's trial, Casey became emotional, crying periodically and wiping her nose with a tissue.
