Last time "Castle" fans saw Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), in the Season 8 winter finale, they had just reconciled after a half-season long split while Beckett focused on the Locksat case. Now that the couple is back together, viewers can expect some romantic fireworks on the show's special Valentine's Day episode, right? Not exactly.

The synopsis for Season 8, episode 10, "Witness for the Prosecution," slated to air Feb. 14, reveals that Castle will be busy in court. The crime writer will be called to the stand as the key witness to a murder from five months before the events in the episode. However, when new information emerges in the trial, Castle and Beckett must race to solve the case before the wrong man is convicted.

Co-showrunner Alexi Hawley told TVLine that the case for which Castle is called to testify is a new one, but that it will still bring to light things from his past that loyal viewers will recognize.

“I think it will be a treat for our longtime fans,” says co-showrunner Terence Paul Winter, “because it refers to several things that have happened in the last few years.”

However, fans may be curious why the episode, curiously scheduled for Valentine's Day and a Sunday — episode 11 will air the following day at the snow's normal Monday night time slot — does not have a more romantic premise. Well, the episode's Valentine's Day air date may be more of a scheduling consequence than a thematic choice.

For one, ABC is likely hoping for a ratings boost having the show air directly after a special episode of "The Bachelor." Second, the bonus episode may be a necessary move to keep the show on schedule following the announcement that the midseason premiere would be pushed back a week from Feb. 1 to Feb. 8.

So, there may be no chocolates and flowers exchanged between Castle and Beckett this Valentine's Day, but, hey, at least "Caskett" is back together again!
