‘Castle’ Showrunners Tease ‘Cliffhanger’ Season 8 Finale, Talk Possibility Of Series Being Canceled
There’s a chance fans of ABC’s “Castle” could be saying goodbye to Kate (Stana Katic) and Castle (Nathan Fillion) sooner rather than later. While the network still hasn’t announced whether the long-running series has been canceled or renewed, “Castle” showrunners are preparing by having two different Season 8 finales in the works.
Co-showrunner Terence Paul White opened up to TVLine about the May 16 finale, titled “Crossfire,” revealing that if ABC brings the show back for Season 9 fans will get a “cliffhanger” ending. According to the outlet, the finale will focus on Castle and Kate’s lives being in jeopardy after they try to catch LokSat again.
“We have one ending, a cliffhanger that we’re excited about, because we believe in ‘Castle’ and we believe that ABC will hopefully, hopefully bring us back,” he said.
However, in the event that the show is axed from the network’s lineup, co-showrunner Alexi Hawley confirmed that fans will get an ending that properly wraps up the entire series.
“Obviously our hope is that we come back ‘all hands on deck’ for Season 9, but everybody needs to make deals. There’s stuff up in the air, so we are trying to leave it in a very dynamic way which leaves open the possibility that maybe the show won’t come back in the same form next season — although, again, we really hope that it does.”
She continued, “We have crafted a finale scene that would exist only if we weren’t coming back.”
Rumors that Castle and Kate’s adventures were coming to an end first surfaced in January during ABC’s TCA Press Tour. According to E! Online, Fillion and Katic’s contracts were up and there was a chance one, or both, wouldn’t return.
“We’d love for ‘Castle’ to keep going for many years to come,” ABC president Paul Lee said. “There are a lot of conversations about how we can do that … there’s lots of good ideas in there. So I am feeling optimistic that we have a lot of good ideas.”
Deadline reported on Friday that Fillion was still negotiating his contract, but said there was a good chance the show would return for Season 9. It may be its last.
