Two socialites were found dead inside a submerged blue Mercedes Benz, which rolled off a ferry that was on the way to Miami Beach.
63-year-old Emma Afra was in the driver's seat while 75-year-old, Viviane Brahms was her passenger.
It is not yet known how the vehicle fell into the water. One witness told the media outlets, the boats tend to be open both at the front and the back, and a chain shields the cars on board.
Aerial footage of the boat after the incident illustrated a space and broken barrier at the front of the Pelican.
Afra was previously depicted at several high profile events in and around the Miami area and chaired a 2012 charity dinner, which was able to fundraise $500,000.
Brahms also attended exclusive parties hosted by art galleries and high fashion labels.
The legal records show that Afra was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in 2018.
Following multiple searches, the dive team found the Mercedes with the two females inside. The police subsequently revealed their identities to the media and next of kin.
The coast guard is investigating how the vehicle could have fallen from the front of the ferry.
The police did not define the causes of death, though. It is still pending the report from the medical examiner.
Footage from the scene showed divers recording the blue Mercedes from the 50-foot deep channel on Tuesday. The car was subsequently taken from the scene on Wednesday morning.
Police spokesman, Alvaro Zabaleta, claimed the drivers found the car, submerged in the area of Government Cut.
President and CEO of the Fisher Island Community Association, Roberto Sosa, claimed that the community is actively assisting the different agencies involved within the recovery efforts.
Fisher Island, where Afra lived, was dubbed the wealthiest Zip code in the United States in 2019. It had featured at several high profile events over the years and was the home of Oprah Winfrey, Mel Brooks, Karolina Kurkova, and Boris Becker.
Fisher Island has an estimated 700 families that either own a home or an apartment though only a small fraction of them are there at any given time, considering they are likely to be celebrities and have numerous other properties.
Fisher Island has been termed as a vacation haunt for the richest who only spend a few weeks to months in the area. It is not the typical residential even by affluent standards.
