Cavaliers Keeping Tabs With Ben Simmons Situation In Philly
KEY POINTS
- Cleveland Cavaliers targeting Ben Simmons of the Philadelphia 76ers
- Cavs confident they can come up with a tempting offer to Sixers
- Garland, Sexton or Osman could be offered as part of Cleveland pitch
The Cleveland Cavaliers are busy trying to figure out their next moves for the 2020-21 NBA season. They do have a formidable frontline but adding another would not hurt. And it appears they are already skimming the market and the name of Ben Simmons has cropped up.
Simmons is out for the season and will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. The Sixers have not shown any indication of moving the former top pick though the right offer could entice them. And the Cavs feel they do have one, a package that could include Darius Garland, Clevleand.com reported.
According to Fedor, the Cavs are confident that one of their young players plus their picks in the coming NBA Draft. Cleveland owns the rights to the sixth-round pick in October and also a future first-rounder from the Milwaukee Bucks. The Cavs rookie is seen as a good fit although this is still subject to change.
Things have not just gone well for Simmons in Philly. His recent injury could be telling, something that could push Sixers management to trade the Australian or even Joel Embiid. This depends on how far Philadelphia can go in the coming NBA playoffs.
If Garland is not acceptable, the Cavs have other assets they can offer. Among them include Collin Sexton and Cedi Osman. If Philly wants more veterans in the mix, Kevin Love or Andre Drummond could be included. It all depends on who between Embiid and Simmons Philly would decide to move.
Offering young players makes sense with Philly wanting to build a franchise for the future. But assessing the team's needs, getting one who can score and knock it down from the perimeter is tempting. Simmons has been criticized for the lack of an outside shot. Though he has worked on it, the 24-year-old cager seems far from owning a decent jump shot.
Should he move to the Cavs, Simmons gives the team someone who is not afraid to take it strong to the basket and act as a good facilitator. Cleveland seems pretty formidable upfront and adding Simmons could give head coach J.B. Bickerstaff with a tall starting unit.
The ball-handling skills of Simmons are well-documented, raising the possibility of him possibly playing the point. His 2019-20 averages alone can attest to that. In 57 games, Simmons averaged 16.4 points, 8.0 assists and 7.8 rebounds per Baskteball-Reference.com.
Philly moving Simmons makes sense though this remains speculations. It all boils down to how the Sixers end their 2019-20 season.
