On Sunday, Whitney Houston’s name began trending on Twitter as fans tweeted out special tributes on what would have been the singer’s 57th birthday.

Houston died in 2012 at the age of 48. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office reported that her cause of death was due to “drowning and effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.”

However, with songs like “I Will Always Love You,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” and “I Have Nothing,” Houston’s fans will continue to keep her memory alive.

Throughout her career, Houston won six Grammy Awards, 22 American Music Awards, 16 Billboard Music Awards, one Emmy Award, and several other trophies in recognition of her legendary talent.

International Business Times has compiled 10 of Houston’s most memorable quotes from A-Z Quotes and Brainy Quote in honor of her birthday.

  • “My mother taught me that when you stand in the truth and someone tells a lie about you, don’t fight it.”
  • “I feel so blessed to just have done what I had done. To be able to just use what God has given me is a blessing. You know, never mind the Grammys, never mind the records, never mind all of that. Just to be able to sing.”
  • “When I decided to be a singer, my mother warned me I’d be alone a lot. Basically we all are. Loneliness comes with life.”
  • “To learn your artistry and to be able to perfect that, is overwhelming. Especially when you are exuding love. The human emotion is a very delicate thing, so you have to be careful about how you present it because it can be kind of scary, or too overwhelming if you’re not careful. So I try to just keep it love.”
  • “Never let your heart take precedence over reason, otherwise you will have problems.”
  • “I’m not crazy about arenas just because I can sell them out. It doesn’t do anything for my ego at all. I want to play places where people don’t have to sit in the nosebleed seats and wonder what the hell is going on.”
  • “Sometimes you do have a good time. But when it gets to the point where you’re sitting in your home and you’re just trying to cover what you don’t want people to know. It’s painful. And then you want more just so that you don't let anybody see you cry. Or anybody to see we're not happy.”
  • “Nobody makes me do anything I don’t want to do. It’s my decision. So the biggest devil is me. I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy.”
  • “You can fool people. You can fool anybody any time of the day, but you can’t fool yourself. At night, when you go home, you’ve got to be straight up with you.”
  • “Judge not for your flaws, but for your triumphs!”
