KEY POINTS

  • The Celtics are not in a hurry to add a big man to help address their rebounding deficiency
  • Boston could skim the free agency depending on the health status of Robert Williams III
  • Malcolm Brogdon is proving to be a gem of an addition for the Celtics

The Boston Celtics hold a 4-2 win-loss record, and the road ahead could be a bit bumpier with Robert Williams III still out after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery.

Williams is projected to return in December, meaning interim head coach Joe Mazzulla will have to find a way to fill the void.

For now, players like Blake Griffin, Noah Vonleh and Luke Kornet are trying to hold up the fort.

However, it also means that stars like Jayson Tatum, Al Horford and Grant Williams will have to play extended minutes.

A plausible solution would be to look at the available free agents at the moment.

Several notable centers are waiting in the wings such as Dwight Howard, DeMarcus Cousins, Hassan Whiteside, and LaMarcus Aldridge among others.

But according to Brian Robb of Masslive, the Celtics are not about to sign any player–particularly Howard and Cousins who could help address rebounding deficiencies that Boston has to deal with at the moment.

But it would be best to note that this is the case for now. These are subject to change by December, depending on the situation of Williams.

The real strength of the Celtics right now is the backcourt as they are not performing satisfactorily, but the need to address the frontline is a need especially if Boston plans to make a return trip to the NBA Finals.

The good news for the Bean City squad is that one of their new additions has stepped up and appears to be a perfect fit to be the new leader for the Boston bench–Malcolm Brogdon.

He put that on display on Sunday, October 30 when the Celtics won over the Washington Wizards at the TD Garden.

Acquired via trade with the Indiana Pacers this past July in exchange for Aaron Nesmith, Daniel Theis, Nik Stauskas, Malik Fitts, Juwan Morgan, and a 2023 first-round draft pick, the 29-year-old cager had 23-points coming off the bench and made sure that the second unit would sustain the same energy that their starters had.

"When we're in there, we play like starters. We play with that energy, we play with that confidence every night as soon as we step on the floor, and that's what we've been doing for the majority of the season thus far," Brogdon said after the game via NBA.com.

The Celtics return to action on Wednesday, November 2 against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Boston is looking to get back at the Cavs after losing last Friday, October 28, 132-123, in overtime.
