CES 2012: CES Day One Gadget Buzz from Polaroid, Swiss Army

LAS VEGAS -- Day two of the 2012 Consumer Electonics Show is under way, so let's go over some buzzworthy gadgets we saw from Polaroid, Sony and Swiss Army on the first day.

Victorinox makes Swiss Army Knives, and they've manged to stuff a one-terabyte storage nub into one of their handy tools with scissors and a knife. It's called the SSD and it's going to be made in sizes ranging from 64 gigabytes to one terabyte. The portable storage drive/knife doesn't have pricing yet, but it could be available starting in April and it works in USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports.

On the security camera front, there was the D-Link Cloud Camera 5000, a remote-operable camera complete with motorized tilt and pan ability. Now you can surveil your crib from afar, and make sure all the action is captured in 720p resolution. Just go to the Web site (mydlink.com) to control the camera, set motion-sensors and tell the camera to start recording given a certain type of action (door/window opening etc.). It can send e-mail alerts and there's even a mydlink+ app for Apple and Android for mobile-based viewing. It could go on sale by April for around $150, but that is just as likely to go up as it is to stay that price.

If you like mobile and you like photography, you'll love the new Polaroid SC1630 Android Smart Camera. It's a smartphone with an optical zoom lens (or is it a camera with smartphone jammed in there?) on the front. It's got a 16 megapixel sensor, three times optical zoom, support for both CDMA and GSM networks and can shoot 720p video. It'll be ready by April too, and for $300, but that price could drop if one of the big U.S. carriers chooses to adopt it and sell subsidized versions. The SC1630 also features Wi-Fi, bluetooth, GPS, 512 megabytes of storage (that seems a bit small) micro SIM slot and micro USB port.

Because the device may get picked up by one of the mobile broadband carriers, Polaroid has included an option to choose the size of photos you want to send and upload. That way you can better manage any data cap you may have on your plan.
