'Challenge: Total Madness' Accused Of Editing Dee Nguyen Out Of Episode As Much As Possible After Firing
When MTV announced that it had severed ties with Dee Nguyen over her Black Lives Matter comments, it really meant it. The reality-TV star appeared to be heavily edited out of Wednesday’s episode of “The Challenge: Total Madness.”
Prior to the start of episode 11, MTV displayed a statement acknowledging that Nguyen won’t be part of future “Challenge” seasons but that the remainder of “Total Madness” will air until its conclusion. “Total Madness” has already been filmed, and Nguyen is one of 15 cast members still vying for their share of the $1 million grand prize.
“As a result of Dee Nguyen’s offensive comments on the Black Lives Matter movement, we have severed ties with her,” reads the statement which was originally tweeted from the show’s official account Monday. “Out of respect for our Challengers, we'll air our season as planned. We strongly condemn systemic racism and stand with those raising their voices against injustice.”
MTV didn’t specifically note that it would cut Nguyen out of forthcoming episode as much as possible, but that’s what some fans believe happened.
The show, which usually runs for 90 minutes, was inexplicably only an hour-long Wednesday. Those extra 30 minutes could have featured additional footage of Nguyen as episode 11 didn’t show any one-on-one interviews with Nguyen, even as she participated in the elimination round. MTV seemingly removed as much footage of Nguyen as possible, though she was a central part of the episode’s storyline.
Several cast members blindsided Nguyen by trying to send her home. When Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio asked for Rogan O’Connor’s blessing to vote Nguyen into elimination, it almost came out of nowhere, possibly because of the footage that was edited out of the episode.
MTV was reached for comment about scenes featuring Nguyen possibly being cut from the last episode but had not responded at press time.
Unfortunately for MTV, Nguyen defeated Mattie Lynn Breaux to stay in the game. It should be interesting to see how the network handles the editing of “Total Madness” going forward, especially if she reaches the Final or potentially wins the season.
Nguyen was one of four winners last season on “Challenge: War of the Worlds 2.”
