KEY POINTS

  • Liverpool finished on top of Group E and are seeded in Last-16
  • The next round of UCL will begin in February
  • Klopp's boys are the defending champions

After Wednesday night's matches, the group stage of the Champions League has ended which means, defending champions Liverpool FC have a confirmed list of their possible opponents in the Round of 16.

With a 2-0 win over Redbull Salzburg in Austria on Tuesday night, Liverpool ended as table toppers in Group E. The second club to have qualified for the knockout round from their group is Italy's Napoli. Since the title holders finished as group leaders, they will be seeded in Monday's draw for the last-16 round.

Jurgen Klopp's side will be paired with a team who finished second in their section. However, the Premier League leaders cannot face Napoli or other English clubs, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

That means the Reds are set to face one of the following five teams when the tournament resumes in February: Real Madrid, Atalanta, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Lyon.

If Liverpool end up playing Real Madrid next, it will be a revenge fixture as the Spanish giants had defeated Liverpool in the Champions League final in the 2017-18 season in Kyiv, Ukraine. In the following season, while Real failed to reach the semi-final, Liverpool replicated their dominance and won their sixth European major title by defeating Spurs in the final.

Meanwhile, their other potential opponent Atalanta are coming off a historic win. The Italian club has reached the knockout stage after losing its first four group matches before they finally clinched a victory by defeating Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0.

One club that could bring both nostalgia and threat to Liverpool is Dortmund as it is Klopp's former club. Liverpool and Dortmund sure have been involved in a few thrilling encounters in the past.

The first legs in the last-16 round will be played on Feb. 18 and 19 or Feb. 25 and 26, with the return matches to be held on March 10 and 11 or March 17 and 18. Since Liverpool are seeded in the Last-16, their first match will be an away fixture and the second match will be played at Anfield.
