KEY POINTS
- James Milner assisted Sadio Mane's goal on Tuesday
- Liverpool defeated Porto 5-1 in their UCL meeting
- Milner has been at Liverpool since 2015
James Milner equaled Liverpool FC legend Steven Gerrard’s Champions League record during the Reds’ 5-1 win over Porto on Tuesday.
Milner, who set up Sadio Mane’s goal at the Estadio do Dragao, has 12 assists for Liverpool in the Champions League, the same as Gerrard, who had captained Liverpool to the top European title in 2005.
No player has set up more goals for the Anfield side than these two, according to Opta Joe.
Liverpool’s regular right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold was not a part of the traveling side to Porto because of an injury. In his absence, Jurgen Klopp played the 35-year-old Milner at the back-line. Milner has played the right-back’s role for the second time this season and once again did not disappoint.
Last week, Alexander-Arnold had missed the home league game against Crystal Palace, making way for Milner to take his position, who then went on to play for full 90 minutes.
Milner, who joined Liverpool from rivals Manchester City in 2015, has been a vital cog of Klopp’s side that has won four trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League.
With the win over Porto on Tuesday, Liverpool have maintained their unbeaten run in the ongoing campaign. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in Porto in the 18th minute before Mane doubled the Reds’ lead ahead of the half-time whistle.
In the second half, Salah netted his second before he and Mane were subbed off. Porto’s 21-year-old midfielder Fábio Vieira scored one for Porto before Brazil’s Roberto Firmino’s cameo ensured there was no coming back for the hosts in the match.
Coming off the bench, Liverpool’s No. 9 Firmino netted a brace to make it 5-1 for the Reds.
Along with Milner, Liverpool’s young midfielder Curtis Jones also made vital contributions with two assists. He set up Salah’s second goal and Firmino’s first.
Liverpool boss hailed Jones after the match, saying the Englishman was everywhere and played a “top-class game defensively.”
"He played a really good game, he was everywhere, he was involved in everything. Set up the first goal with a surprising finish, the goalie cannot save it. In a lot of other situations he was really there - maybe not as spectacular as the offensive stuff, but defensively he played a top-class game. He defended really well, pressed from the blind side, a lot of things I liked a lot about his performance tonight. So, let's keep going, Curtis, it was not bad tonight," Klopp was quoted by Liverpool’s official website, as saying, after his side’s comfortable triumph in Porto.
